The pitcher
pitched, Ricky swung.
“Strike one,” yelled the umpire.
Jonathan crouched down beside Ricky’s wheelchair, in a “go” position.
The pitcher threw the ball again.
“Ball one,” yelled the umpire.
Another pitch, another swing.
“Strike two,”
“Oh, no!” said Ricky, keeping his eye on the ball.
Jonathan could see he was very tense and nervous again. “You can do it!” he
said.
“Ball two,” yelled the umpire.
The pitcher looked at Ricky and Jonathan, threw the ball again. Ricky swung
hard, his bat slammed into the ball. It flew out to center field. The
outfielder leaped and missed the ball. Jonathan sprinted toward first base.
He passed first, passed second , and slid into third. The whole team
was yelling, “Run, Ricky, run.”
When the next batter brought Jonathan to home plate, the other team cheered,
“Run, Ricky, run.” Even the parents on the other team were cheering
for Ricky.
Jonathan ran over to Ricky. He gave him a high-five.
“Man,” said Ricky, “I don’t believe this happened. I can really be a
part of the team again.”
“You sure can.” said Jonathan proudly.
