Recipe for Making Memories

Next Page

This recipe for making memories takes one grandmother, one nine year old granddaughter, a cold March evening in 1942, one living room, a batch of sugar cookies and a pinch of love.
As I opened the huge glass paneled door to my grandma’s old white frame home, instantly I smelled freshly baked sugar cookies.  Grandma, with her white hair piled high in a bun on her head , and blue eyes that melted one’s heart, stood with her outstretched arms beckoning me to come. I lunged into her embrace and felt smothered as my head nestled into her large soft bosom.  She kissed the top of my head. She smiled.  She had even white teeth.  She wore a brown gunnysack print, with long sleeves, and lace petite-point at the throat.
The living room was lit with one gooseneck floor lamp bent over an old treadle sewing machine.  A little maroon velvet upholstered footstool, with massive maple carved legs , sat beside the sewing machine;  along-side was grandma’s straight back chair with a black leather seat.
