Julie let out a frightened shriek that echoed through the woods.
She dashed out from behind the tree and started running as fast as she
could. As she ran, stumbling, she looked up to the left and saw the top of
the mountain and a clearing in the cloudy sky that seemed within an arms
reach for her. She had to leave the path to scramble up the hill.
She struggled to maintain her footing. She heard rustlings behind her,
but she didn’t look back.
“I’ve got to reach the top,” thought Julie. “I’ve
got to reach the top before Jake catches me.”
When she was almost there, she made one last grab for a
branch of a tree and pulled herself up to the crest of the mountain.
At last. She made it. Her heart pounded in her ears, but she
kept on running. Soon she discovered a familiar path.
“Why, I know where I am,” said Julie aloud. “This
path goes right into Green road!”
Such relief and joy overcame her that she kept on
running until she finally rounded a curve and came upon the driveway to
their cottage.
The storm was over. The sun was making a glorious entrance through the
clouds. Blue skies appeared. Julie saw Hank coming out the back
door as she ran down the path toward him.
