“They got mommas’ and daddys‘, grandpa?” said
Stephen.
“They sure have. Just like you do.” said grandpa.
Stephen looked very puzzled now and asked, “But how do they know which fish
is their mommy or daddy?”
“Oh, they know, Stephen. Just like you know
yours.”
Stephen continued to ask many questions of grandpa about all things related
to fish, their brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles and cousins. He
kept grandpa busy answering all his questions.
Just as Stephen was about to ask another question, his
‘bobber’ went out of sight. Grandpa noticed it before Stephen.
“Quick, Stephen, your ‘bobber’ is down! Pull up
on your line. Start reeling in!”
Stephen’s eyes got big as he screamed, “Oh, boy, I got
a fish, I got a fish!”
“Keep pulling, Stephen, he’s a big one. Here let me
help you. Don’t let him get away.”
Stephen is pulling the line up as hard as he can.
The fish is wiggling and splashing around. Grandpa put his arms around
either side of Stephen and helped pull the fish on board.
“Wow, Stephen, good job! You caught a big one.
He must be at least a foot long.”
“Boy, wait until Jonathan sees this one. I
bet he can’t catch one this big.” said Stephen proudly.
“We’ll put him in this pail, Stephen, so you can take him back to show
your mom and dad and Jonathan.”
