David woke with the sun streaming in his face. It was Saturday, no
school. Hurray, he thought. His dog, Heidi, bounded in and jumped up
on his bed. She licked his face and David gave her a big hug. Heidi
was the family’s pet German Shepherd. They’d had her since she was a
puppy. She’s now five years old. She was David’s best friend.
The family is going to move to England in June and won’t be taking Heidi
with them.
David sighed, “Oh, Heidi, what am I ever going to do
without you?”
David sat on the edge of his bed, thinking. There
must be some way to convince his parents to take Heidi with them!
“I’ve got it,” he cried. He yanked on his clothes
and raced to the barn. Heidi pranced after him. As he swung open
the barn door, five kittens scrambled toward him. Heidi jumped around
them in circles. The kittens darted after her tail. David picked
up their dish, “Come on, Heidi, let’s go get your little friends some milk.”
Together they trotted to the house.
Janie and Karla, his two younger sisters, were in the kitchen eating
breakfast.
