He made a sudden leap to her side and yanked
onto her shirt and kept her from falling into the river.
By this time Abby was really crying. Billy was scared
and relieved all at the same time.
Soon the boat was on a straight course down the river.
More noise was heard coming from up ahead. Billy couldn’t tell if it was the
rapids or the falls.
But suddenly he heard another noise and looked up into
the sky. He saw a helicopter circling above them.
Billy and Abby started frantically waving their arms.
The helicopter came closer to them , and Billy could see the words “AIR
RESCUE” on the side of the craft. He also saw a person waving to them from
the cockpit.
A basket, with a person in it, was lowered down to them.
“Hi, there,” said the man , who was dressed in a drab
olive green jumpsuit. “Are you the Harrington kids?”
“We sure are,” said Billy. “ I’m Billy and this is
Abby. Man, are we glad to see you.”
“Oh, yeah,” said Abby. She looked so relieved and happy
to see this man.
“Ok, now Abby, you’re going up first. Don’t be afraid.
This is real safe. We do this all the time. Climb in and sit down, and hang
on. By the way, my name is Ed. OK, Abby, ready?” said Ed.
“Yes,” she said.
