They drifted around a bend in the river and saw , up ahead, a man
standing on a bridge .The man was waving to them. Billy and Abby
frantically, waved back to him.
The man yelled, ”Who are you kids? Where are you from?”
“We’re Abby and Billy Harrington,” answered Billy.
“We’re from Twin Oaks Junction. We don’t have any oars.”
Billy could see the man talking on his cell phone.
“Ok, kids, don’t worry. I’m calling for help,” said the
man.
By then , their boat had drifted swiftly under the
bridge, and Billy saw the man wave to them. Billy felt much more relaxed and
confident that they would be rescued. But how, thought Billy. How would
anybody be able to reach them in this swift current? Besides Billy had no
idea how far away they were from the falls.
They continued to drift smoothly down the river for
sometime.
“Billy, do you really think somebody will find us?”
said Abby.
“Of course,” said Billy. But he wasn’t all that sure
and he wasn’t going to say that to Abby. All he needed now was a crying
sister on his hands.
Billy could hear cars, driving on a road, off in the
distance. He wondered if they were near a town or the city of Big Rapids.
Billy hoped it wasn’t Big Rapids ‘cause that meant they must be getting
nearer to the big falls. Billy felt really scared now. He wasn’t about to
mention this fact to Abby, who was already looking very frightened.
