The boat seemed to be going faster again. Billy
could see more rocks and whirling water up ahead. He looked at Abby, who now
was starting to cry.
“Billy, I’m really scared. I think we’re going to tip
over. We’re going to drown”, she cried.
“Just hang on tight. We can ride these waters. This
boat is flat bottomed and heavy. Don’t worry we’re gonna be alright,” Billy
yelled.
But he was worried and starting to feel a little scared
also. He can’t let Abby see him scared.
The boat bumped and scraped against the rocks and Billy
tried desperately to hang onto one of the rocks. But the boat was going too
fast and the water current spun the boat around in a circle.
“Billy, Billy,” screamed Abby.
“Just keep hanging on tight.”
Suddenly the water became calmer and the boat settled
into a smooth, drifting pattern. Abby and Billy felt more relieved. They
continued to drift for a long time. Billy kept talking to Abby, trying to
reassure her that everything was fine and they would be found soon.
“Mommy and daddy must be worried and mad at us by now,”
said Abby.
“They’ll be lookin for us. Yeah, they’ll probably
be mad at us,” said Billy.
